We have decided to postpone Sand Storm IV until the early spring. Unfortunately delays in getting a permit caused us to open registration too late and many of our regular teams had commitments they could not change. For those few teams that did register, you will be receiving a full refund on your registration. We will begin mailing them out on Monday 11/9. We regret we had to make this decision, however we assure you we will come back with an awesome race in early spring!
10/24/2009 - Finishing up Sand Storm IV course
Aaron and I had fun a couple of weeks ago doing our preliminary walk through of the race course. You can expect some really fun and fast mountain biking and of course some trekking that will literally take your breath away (and we aren't being romantic). Lets break it down by recreation and long course:
Recreation Course:
You will be riding roughly 10-12 miles on your bike through some really fun and fast terrain. You will also do some cross country trekking of 2-3 miles retrieving check points. When its all said and done you would have been on the course roughly 15 miles. You will be required to use a map to arrive at your checkpoints, but don't worry. The navigation is simple enough with the detailed maps and checkpoints pre-plotted for you. If you've never adventure raced before this course will leave you buzzing for days. The Sand Storm IV Adventure Race will be very fun, adrenaline packed, and as challenging as you want to make it!
Long Course:
We aren't telling you how long the course is...but its longer than the recreation course thats for sure. As usual...mountain biking will be great and trekking will be almost ENTIRELY cross country (bring a comb!). The long course will have an orienteering leg with a twist...we selected an area with barely any topographic features to follow. That means you'll have to be proficient in shooting bearings with your compass...if your rusty...we suggest you start practicing! We won't provide you with bearings or distances, we will only provide you with points on a map...you do the rest. When Aaron and I finished pre-running this orienteering course, we felt mentally drained for all the focus we had to put into navigating...it was AWESOME!
